What is MOBI?
MOBI is the ebook format developed by Mobipocket SA (acquired by Amazon in 2005) and used extensively on Kindle devices. Amazon has largely transitioned to newer formats (AZW3, KFX) internally, but .mobi files are still accepted by older Kindles and widely distributed for DRM-free ebooks.
MOBI files use a header-based binary format. DRM-free MOBI files can be parsed with custom code to extract the HTML content and images. DRM-protected files (purchased Kindle books) are encrypted and cannot be decrypted or converted by any standard tool.
What is EPUB?
EPUB is the open ebook standard from the W3C. EPUB 3 is the current version, supporting HTML5 content, CSS3 styling, audio/video, MathML, and SVG. EPUB files are ZIP archives with a standard directory structure.
EPUB is supported by Apple Books, Kobo, Google Play Books, Adobe Digital Editions, Calibre, and most dedicated ereaders except Kindle (though Kindle added EPUB support in 2022).
MOBI vs EPUB: The ebook format landscape
MOBI (and its successors AZW, AZW3, KFX) are Amazon's proprietary formats, optimized for Kindle devices and apps. EPUB is the universal open standard used by everyone else.
The ebook industry has largely standardized on EPUB. Most publishers, libraries (OverDrive, Libby), and non-Amazon stores distribute in EPUB. Converting your MOBI library to EPUB ensures long-term compatibility with the widest range of readers and devices.
