Random Endangered Species Generator
Generate a random animal classified Vulnerable, Endangered, Critically Endangered, or Extinct in the Wild — for biodiversity lessons, conservation projects, and awareness.
What it does
Pre-filtered to threatened species
Conservation status is locked to VU, EN, CR, and EW. Every Generate click returns a species facing real population decline.
IUCN-style classification
Each card shows the IUCN-style status with both color and text label, plus the year of curation. Status is reviewed annually.
Cross-class coverage
Endangered mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, fish, and invertebrates — the threats are not limited to one branch of life.
Save your conservation list
Heart species you want to research or support. Export your favorites as a CSV or plain-text list — useful for school projects, donor pitches, or personal reading lists.

Heart species, share a filtered link, or export a CSV — useful for fundraisers, posters, and lessons.
When to use this
Earth Day classroom activity
A teacher generates 20 random endangered animals and asks each student to pick one to research and present. The mix of species — pangolins, axolotls, condors, rhinos, corals — keeps the class lively.
Conservation awareness post
A nonprofit generates a daily endangered species, copies the fact and emoji, and posts it on social. The writing is concise and ready to publish.
Personal reading list
A reader curious about biodiversity loss saves 30 endangered species, exports as plain text, and uses it as a Wikipedia browsing list — one species each evening.
Frequently Asked Questions
How is "endangered" defined here?
- We follow the IUCN Red List categories: Vulnerable (VU), Endangered (EN), Critically Endangered (CR), and Extinct in the Wild (EW). The Conservation filter is locked to those four on this page.
How recent is the conservation status data?
- Each entry records its statusYear (2026 for v1). The database is reviewed annually for taxonomy and conservation updates. Species do graduate up or down lists, so always cross-check against the current IUCN listing for research.
Why are some popular animals not flagged endangered?
- Many lions, tigers, and elephants are Vulnerable rather than Endangered — they are threatened but not yet at the highest risk levels. The Vulnerable filter is on by default to include them. Toggle it off to focus on EN/CR/EW only.
Are extinct animals included?
- Only Extinct in the Wild (EW) species — animals that survive in captivity but no longer have wild populations. Fully extinct species are out of scope for this page.
Can I use this for a school project?
- Yes. Generate a batch, save your favorites, then export as CSV or plain text. The fact paragraphs are written for accessibility and can serve as a starting point for further research.
