Random Mammal Generator
Generate a random mammal from a curated database of 200+ species — with scientific name, habitat, conservation status, and a one-paragraph fact for each.
What it does
Pre-filtered to mammals
The Class filter is locked to mammals on this page — every Generate click returns a real mammal species, from harvest mouse to blue whale. Adjust other filters (habitat, region, diet) freely.
200+ curated species
Big cats, bears, canids, primates, marsupials, cetaceans, pinnipeds, hoofed mammals, rodents, mustelids, bats, and more — all hand-curated with scientific names and IUCN-style conservation status.
Conservation badges
Every mammal carries its IUCN-style conservation status badge. Use it for biodiversity lessons or save endangered favorites to track species worth protecting.
All four modes
Single mode for one mammal at a time, Batch up to 50, Game mode for guessing, Writing Prompt for story seeds — each pre-narrowed to mammals.

When to use this
Mammal classification activity
A biology teacher generates 12 random mammals and asks students to group them by order — Carnivora, Primates, Cetacea, Rodentia. Each card shows the order, making this a self-correcting exercise.
Endangered mammals study
A student researching biodiversity loss applies the Endangered preset and saves all the critically endangered mammals as favorites. Export to CSV gives a ready-made study list.
Random pet name inspiration
A new pet parent looking for an unusual name generates random small mammals — meeting the binturong, fennec, and quokka. Pick a species, pick a name.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many mammals are in the database?
- Roughly 200 hand-curated mammal species, spanning every major group from rodents to whales. The list grows over time and is reviewed annually for taxonomy and conservation updates.
Can I filter to just one continent?
- Yes. Open Filters and pick one or more regions — Africa, Asia, Australia/Oceania, Europe, North America, South America, Antarctica, or Worldwide. Combine with habitat or diet for finer control.
Are mammals like whales and dolphins included?
- Yes. Cetaceans (whales, dolphins, orcas), pinnipeds (seals, walruses), and sirenians (manatees, dugongs) are all classified as mammals and appear here when you filter to ocean or freshwater habitats.
Is the safe-for-kids filter on?
- Yes by default. Some mammals with graphic predation descriptions are flagged. Toggle the Safe for kids switch off in Filters for older audiences.
Can I use this for the guess-the-animal game?
- Yes. Switch to Game mode — the names are hidden and progressive hints reveal the habitat, region, diet, and first letter. Difficulty Easy is great for younger kids; Hard challenges the classroom.
