Stripe Billing adds 0.5% to every recurring charge, on top of the standard processing fee. For a US-based subscription, that’s 2.9% + 30¢ + 0.5% Billing = effective ~3.4% + 30¢. The 0.5% funds Stripe’s subscription engine — proration, dunning, customer portal, invoice generation, tax handling. For most subscription businesses, building this in-house is more expensive than paying the 0.5%.

Frequently asked questions

Is Stripe Billing’s 0.5% fee always charged?
Only on charges Stripe identifies as recurring (created via a subscription object). One-time charges using the same customer’s saved card don’t trigger the 0.5% Billing fee. Custom integrations that handle their own recurring logic via direct charges also bypass Billing — at the cost of building dunning/proration yourself.
Does the 0.5% apply to trial-period transitions?
When a trial ends and the first paid charge fires, that charge is recurring → 0.5% applies. The trial itself is free (no charge, no fee). Free trials don’t burn fees; they only burn the customer-portal storage cost (de minimis).
Can I negotiate Stripe Billing pricing at scale?
At $1M+/mo in subscription revenue, yes — talk to Stripe sales. Custom Billing pricing typically reduces the 0.5% to ~0.3% or eliminates it entirely as part of a broader processing-volume discount.
