Shopify Payments is Stripe under the hood — but with Shopify-specific rates that depend on your Shopify plan tier. The catch: Shopify charges an additional 0.5–2% on top of card rates if you use Stripe directly instead of Shopify Payments. So if you’re on Shopify, Shopify Payments is essentially mandatory.

I’m not on Shopify — should I switch to use Shopify Payments?
No. Shopify Payments is only worth it if you’re already committed to Shopify’s commerce platform. The processing rate alone isn’t enough reason to migrate your entire storefront.
Can I use Stripe and Shopify together?
Technically yes, but Shopify charges 0.5–2% on top of Stripe’s rate as a "third-party gateway" fee. This wipes out any savings. If you’re on Shopify, use Shopify Payments.
