Are Stripe fees subject to GST in Australia?
No — Stripe processing fees are exempt from Australian GST as a financial supply under the GST Act. You don’t charge or pay GST on the processing fees themselves.
Why is the Australian rate (1.7%) so much lower than the US (2.9%)?
Australian regulations cap interchange more aggressively than US regulations, similar to Europe. The 1.7% rate effectively passes that lower interchange through to merchants. Amex remains higher at 2.9% because Amex sets its own (higher) interchange globally.
