Stripe Connect splits a single customer payment between a platform and a connected account (the seller, contractor, or service provider). Three Connect types — Standard, Express, Custom — have different fee structures. Express and Custom each add 0.25% to processing. Cross-border (platform and connected account in different countries) adds another 0.25%. The platform also charges its own application fee, which Stripe routes back to the platform.

Frequently asked questions

How is the application fee paid?
Stripe collects the full transaction amount, deducts processing fees, deducts the application fee, and routes the application fee to the platform’s Stripe balance and the rest to the connected account. The platform sees application-fee revenue in its Stripe Dashboard.
Can the connected account see the platform’s application fee?
Yes — connected accounts can see the application fees deducted from their charges in their Stripe Dashboard. This is intentional transparency. Some marketplaces price their application fee in their own UI ("Marketplace fee: 5%") so the seller doesn’t have to dig through the Stripe Dashboard to understand the deduction.
Standard, Express, or Custom Connect — which is cheapest?
Standard is cheapest (no Connect surcharge), but it’s also the least flexible (the connected account has its own Stripe relationship). Express is +0.25% but Stripe handles connected-account onboarding/dashboard. Custom is +0.25% but you control everything. The 0.25% delta is meaningful at scale ($1M/mo connected payments = $30k/year in extra fees), so factor it into your build-vs-buy decision.
