Stripe Billing adds 0.5% to every recurring charge on top of the standard processing fee. So a US subscription charged on a domestic card costs 2.9% + 30¢ + 0.5% Billing = ~3.4% + 30¢ effective. The 0.5% funds Stripe’s subscription engine: proration, dunning ("Smart Retries"), customer portal, invoicing, tax handling.

Frequently asked questions

Does the 0.5% apply to one-time charges using a saved card?
No — only to charges Stripe identifies as part of a subscription object. Charging a saved card outside the subscription flow (e.g., an upgrade fee billed as a one-off) doesn’t trigger the Billing fee.
Can I get the 0.5% Billing fee waived?
For very high-volume subscription businesses, yes — talk to Stripe sales. Custom Billing pricing is typically negotiated as part of a broader processing-volume discount and reduces the 0.5% to ~0.3% or eliminates it entirely.
